Abstract:Different approaches are considered to create artificial clouds and rain to mitigate freshwater scarcity, drought and desertification, which are worsening as the world's population and the climate changes. This deficit is covered by seawater desalination, groundwater extraction, treatment and reuse of waste and drainage water. But water scarcity, frequent droughts and onset of deserts continue. One of the promising ways to replenish fresh water resources is to precipitate a part of atmospheric moisture, which is a continuously renewable and inexhaustible source. Traditional cloud seeding technologies do not work when there are no suitable clouds, which is often the case in arid parts of the world. Unlike them, fundamental research and field experiments on cloud and rain creation using a zenith-directed jet of an aircraft engine saturated with highly effective hygroscopic aerosols showed a certain, albeit small, possibility of stimulating artificial small and short-lived cloud structures. To stimulate more powerful clouds, it is proposed to use a set of dozens of aircraft engines, or an aerospace engine, and hygroscopic aerosol spraying system. Despite the high cost of new technology, it is still hundreds of times less than the cost of seawater desalination.
