Dr. Gary Thunen / Chief Scientist and Senior Fellow, Advanced Technology Center, Lockheed Martin Space

Mr. Gary Thunen is a Lockheed Martin Senior Fellow and Chief Scientist for the Advanced Technology Center in Palo Alto, California, the research and development division of Lockheed Martin’s Space business unit. He joined the company in 1985, and during his tenure has had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of electro-optical sensor development programs, special studies and independent research projects in the areas of satellite and airborne remote sensing for weather, environmental and other mission applications. Mr. Thunen’s technical areas of expertise are in sensor system phenomenology modeling, data exploitation and performance evaluation of electro-optical sensor systems. This includes radiometric signature modeling, atmospheric propagation modeling, sensor performance optimization, image processing, and model validation.

Mr. Thunen received a BA in Geophysics from the University of California, Berkeley and a MS in Scientific Computing and Computational Mathematics from Stanford University. He has authored more than 35 papers and publications in the fields of phenomenology modeling, signature analysis, data exploitation, and sensor performance evaluation.
